I did gymnastics for 10 years as a kid. It taught me great body awareness, how to be uncomfortable, and how to push myself. After high school, I had no fitness plan other than trying to keep weight off, especially after having my first child. I would wander around the globo gym, using the treadmill and elliptical, doing one set on a random machine. I tried classes: spin, yoga, pilates, etc. I ran and did P90X at home. Nothing stuck.

My husband was on his second deployment, and I  had just finished grad school and moved to Utah on my own. He told me he started working out with his army friends doing this thing called CrossFit. I found a local gym and joined so that we could work out together when he came home.  I back squatted 200 pounds during my first workout.  I’ve been going back ever since.  I had found something that I was excited about. I love the variety, something new every day, and that I don’t have to plan. It’s like having a gymnastics coach again. I show up, the WOD is on the board, and someone yells at me (nicely) to push harder and do better.

I’ve been doing CF for almost 15 years now and  coaching on and off for the last 10. I know I have the ability as a coach to help people improve, especially with lifting and gymnastics technique. I also like to help people make a plan/goal for each workout and work on their mental toughness.  I believe there are many paths to health and fitness, but CrossFit has been the best one for me.   I can do things now I never dreamed I was capable of, and among other things, that has changed my outlook on my own physical appearance.  I care less about the scale and trying for some impossible false ideal, and more about how awesome it is to clean a heavy barbell or run a 5K or move furniture by myself.  I want everyone to feel more comfortable with themselves and be proud of what their body and mind can do with a little bit of effort and consistency.
